The following bird list for Luang Namtha's Nam Ha Protected Area is taken from a report produced by the Wildlife Conservation Society; A Wildlife and Habitat Survey of Nam Ha and Nam Kong Protected Areas, Luang Namtha Province, Lao PDR, 1997. This list is by no means exhaustive. Once this area is discovered by birders the list is sure to grow.
Taxonomy and nomenclature follow Inskipp et al. (1996).
Key
NH = Northern Highlands
SH = Southern Highlands
LNTP = Luang Namtha Plain
NK = Nam Kong Protected Area
h= The species occurred historically, but is now believed to be extirpated from the area
r = Reported by local people, but without further substantiating evidence
ex = probably extirpated
p = present. Species occurrence has been established beyond reasonable doubt, but abundance uncertain. The elusive nature of mammals in the area makes it difficult to assess abundance for more than just a few species. Some may be recorded or encountered very rarely, and yet persist in relatively high numbers.
? = requires confirmation
Abundance codes
1 = common to abundant
2 = uncommon to fairly common
3 = scarce or rare
These abundance codes are guidelines only. They have been derived subjectively, based solely on the intuitive scale. This aims to take into account variables such as insufficient time spent in suitable habitat and different species-specific/behavioral characters, e.g. the elusive nature of some species, the highly gregarious nature of others, nocturnal habits and species which occur in naturally low-density populations.
